| Set in the
heart of Hercegovina, Medjugorje covers the areas of Bijakovici, Miletina, Surmanci and Vionica. Over 11,000 Irish pilgrims travelled to Medjugorje in 2003. Medjugorje lived like any other village in this region until June 24, 1981 when the apparitions began, subsequently the life of the parish changed. Our Lady chose for her witnesses not only the six visionaries,but also the entire parish and its pilgrims. This was expressly told in the following message: ‘I have chosen this parish in a special way and I wish to lead it’. On June 24th, 1981, at about 6pm, six young peoplesaw on the hill called ‘Crnica’ a young woman with a child in her arms, who gave them a sign with her hand to come nearer. Surprised and scared they did not approach her. On the following day, June 25th, 1981, at the same time, four of them felt strongly drawn towards the place where they had seen the vision the previous day, the vision they had was Our Lady. She told them “I am the Queen of Peace and God has sent me here to help you”. Three of the visionaries continue to see Our Lady to this day |
